Come along to CINE[STHESIA] - our new film club showcasing hidden gems from the National Library of Scotland's Moving Image Archive.

Tonight we look at Films of Protest and Activism ;From the Women for Equal Pay Movement to the Glasgow Rent Strike demonstrations, take a look at the films which capture the protests and activism that aimed to change the shape of Scottish society forever.

Film details:

1. So You Think You Know About the Cuts? [13.53 mins]

(1976)

Filmed by Douglas Allen and Alex Graham

Campaign film highlighting the effects of the public expenditure cuts on university students, as seen through the eyes of Sammie, a female student at glasgow university. Using photomontage, graphics, newspaper headlines and animation to convey propaganda and government position, with voiceover political song in the style of Woody Guthrie.

2. Woman for equal pay demonstration, Beach Ballroom Aberdeen. [2.04 mins]

3. Clydebank’s Rents Protest [6.55 mins]

(1973)

Footage of Clydebank Rents protests in 1973, featuring Jimmy Reid reading a declaration of intent letter.

4. Red Skirts on Clydeside [38.48 mins]

(1984)

A documentary revisiting the 1915 Glasgow Rent Strikes, with interviews of some of the women involved alonside fascinating archive footage of the time.
