Join us for a guided tour of the Stanley Sewage Treatment Works, hosted by the Drainage Services Department. Explore Hong Kong’s first cavern-based sewage treatment facility and learn about its innovative design, operations, and environmental protection measures.

Overview

Stanley Sewage Treatment Works (Stanley STW) is a secondary sewage treatment facility uniquely built inside caverns to preserve the natural environment of the southern Hong Kong district. Serving over 27,000 residents in Stanley, Ma Hang, Tai Tam, Chung Hom Kok, and Red Hill, the plant currently treats around 8,800 m³ of sewage per day, with a design capacity of 11,600 m³ per day.

As part of the Stanley Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Scheme initiated in 1989, Stanley STW was constructed between November 1990 and February 1995 using advanced cavern construction technology. The facility is housed within three large caverns, each approximately 120 metres long, 15 metres wide, and 17 metres high, along with over 450 metres of road access, ventilation tunnels, and shafts.

Stanley STW is the first of its kind in Southeast Asia, offering a visually unobtrusive and environmentally considerate solution. Its underground design minimizes disruption to the surrounding community both during construction and daily operations.
