Have your say on the Government’s new Late Payments consultation
Healthy cash flow is the lifeblood of every business. Yet late payments remain one of the most persistent challenges facing SMEs, stifling growth, disrupting operations, and in some cases forcing businesses to close their doors. The Government has now launched a new consultation setting out proposals to tackle this issue head-on, with the aim of delivering the most significant reforms on late payments in over 25 years.
The consultation looks at four key areas where businesses are most affected:
- Late payments – where invoices are not paid within the agreed terms.
- Long payment terms – where payment terms extend beyond 60 days.
- Disputed payments – where disagreements delay or reduce payments.
- Unfair practices around retention payments – particularly in construction, where retained money is lost through upstream insolvency or withheld unfairly.
These measures build on actions already taken by Government, including new transparency requirements on large companies, the launch of a Fair Payment Code, and the appointment of a new Small Business Commissioner. Together, they aim to improve payment behaviour, strengthen accountability, and ensure businesses are paid fairly and on time.
We want to hear directly from our members on how these proposals could impact your business and sector. Your feedback will help us shape our response to Government and ensure your experiences are reflected in the consultation process.
Join our online roundtable at 09:30 – 11:00 on Thursday 9 October to share your views.
This is your opportunity to influence change and make sure the voice of our members is heard loud and clear.
