DEVELOP YOURSELF, DEVELOP YOUR HR CAREER
The CIPD Midlands Student Conference will be taking place at Aston University on Saturday 10 March. The 2017 conference was attended by over 170 CIPD students from across the Midlands, with full-time students, part-time students and those studying by blended or distance learning all represented.
Five reasons why you should join your local CIPD student event of the year:
1. gain skills and knowledge to help you develop your career in HR or L&D
2. learn from practical case studies on current themes in HR, and discover what future trends might look like
3. get career advice from successful HR leaders who made it to the top, across different business sectors
4. network with local CIPD students and professionals
5. meet CIPD branch reps from your area and learn how you can get involved.
CIPD member tickets are £42 (including VAT) and include a full day of practical learning, lunch and refreshments. Both full-time and part-time students will benefit equally, and it’s a great opportunity for distance-learning students to meet your virtual classmates.
CONFERENCE PROGRAMME
Keynote sessions will include:
- Beyond compliance: the role of HR in driving business performance
Guest speaker: Ian Turner, Global Learning & Development Business Partner from Specsavers Optical Group
Ian Turner has over twenty-five years’ experience in retail operations as well as learning and development. Ian has worked across several large national and international blue-chip organisations working as a leader, trainer, facilitator, coach and passionate advocate of the 70-20-10 model, creating innovative blended learning solutions to drive individual or team capability and business performance. Most recently Ian has worked with the Specsavers HR Team to support the development of the HR Business Partner role to deliver key strategic business goals. When not involved with learning and development you will find Ian working on his second passion, that is, restoring classic British and Japanese motorcycles of the 60's and 70's.
- Managing Talent: Reaching your full potential
Guest speaker: Carmen Watson, Managing Director Pertemps
Carmen Watson has established herself as one of the UK’s most successful recruitment leaders. She joined Pertemps in 1976 as a secretary and, by the age of 24, was running a £5m business as a branch manager in Wolverhampton. Entering the boardroom as Commercial Director in 1983, Dudley born Carmen became instrumental in the rise of Pertemps. During the period 1983 to 2000 she was responsible for the formation of a corporate business team. Turnover grew tenfold from £32m in just a decade to £323m. The serious scaling up of the business during this time also saw Pertemps double its branch footprint across the UK. In the year of 2000 Carmen was promoted to the position of Managing Director and then Chairperson in 2012. In 2015 she was named one of the most powerful female leaders in recruitment an accolade bestowed upon her in the successive 2 years which followed.
Her passion and commitment is not only reserved for recruitment. A long term supporter of diversity and inclusion in the workplace. She is a foremost speaker on Women in the Boardroom, supports the elimination of unconscious bias and in her spare time acts as a cross-mentoring facilitator to aspiring leaders.
The conference will also include a choice of workshops sessions covering:
- What does it mean to be an HR professional, and why is this important for the future world of work? - Louisa Baczor, CIPD
- Networking with Confidence - Liz Tucker, Shepherd Creative
- Harassment and social media: an HR headache - Helen Hughes, Shakespeare Martineau
- L&D Evaluation: Measuring What Matters - Paul Beesley, Beyond Theory
- HR SOS: you are not on your own - Malcolm Boswell, ACAS
The day will conclude with a panel discussion on What I wish I knew when I started out in HR! where established HR Leaders will share their career experiences and top tips.
