Our first ever regional full day conference is aimed at HR&D practitioners and hopes to bring together the inspirational with the practical.

09:30 - 10.30  The Art of Brilliance – Andy Cope

The ‘Art of Being Brilliant’ keynote will provoke lots of thought and laughter, exploring how you can be you, brilliantly. The aim is to share some ‘secrets’ of Positive Psychology, focusing on learning new habits of thinking and behaviour that will sustain personal ‘brilliance’, in and out of work. 

 Andy Cope is a qualified teacher, author and learning junkie. He’s just putting the finishing touches to a Loughborough University PhD thesis, with the aim of becoming the UK’s first ‘Doctor of Happiness’ (yes, really!)  Andy is also a best-selling author; he writes the ‘Brilliant’ range of self-help books for adults and teenagers, and also pens the successful children’s ‘Spy Dog’ series for Puffin.

 Andy’s done numerous TV and radio appearances. He has also set up the hugely successful 2%ers club, the UK’s first, foremost and...err...only society for happy people.

a) 'Why Rivers of Ambition Turn into Trickles of Change' - Craig Smith

We’ve all seen it happen… big rivers of big organisational change, created and launched with ambition and energy that end up as trickles of change when we get to implementation. In these situations, one of the biggest challenges we face is how to connect our employees with what it is we are trying to do and their role in making it happen.

How do you generate and maintain a positive dialogue about organisational change? Craig Smith from BigPicture Learning will show you how to use metaphor, imagery and dialogue to connect your people to your change. Craig’s talk will be illustrated (literally) with innovative case studies and examples from clients such as Tommee Tippee, Boots and CIPD itself.

b) ‘Building your Employer Brand’ – A Case Study in Excellence from Arriva

Runners up in the HR&D team of the year CIPDNE award 2016

Arriva is one of the largest providers of passenger transport in Europe, employing more than 60,000 people and delivering more than 2.2 billion passenger journeys each year. In 2015 the HR team facilitated a single employer brand to be developed and agreed across all 14 countries they co-ordinate. Attend this seminar to hear how they did it.

c) ‘Emotional Intelligence’ – Andy Cope

Emotional intelligence is about intelligent living - uncovering why you feel the way you do and showing how to transform your thinking so you can live a full colour, high-definition, surround-sound life.  This session will help to unpick limiting beliefs, building on the Art of Being Brilliant messages about being your best self and living a flourishing life.

a) 'Apprenticeship Levy - an Employer Case Study’ - Andrew Cumiskey

Join Andrew, Group Learning and Development Manager at Bellway Homes plc, in this session to hear how a large north east based company is embracing the changing apprenticeship reforms. The session will cover an explanation of their journey so far and a sharing of the key milestones to building new apprenticeship programmes that fulfil needs of the business. You will hear from both the perspective of the employer as well as a training provider with an opportunity for questions to both

b‘The Power of Understanding Personality Preferences within the Workplace’ - OPP

This session will introduce the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and explore the impact it can have on engaging individuals, leaders and teams. Suitable for those who have no knowledge of the tool as well as those who want to know how to use it more powerfully; this session will highlight the benefits of applying personality preferences to support activities such as leadership development and team development.Ben Vernazza from OPP leads this session

c) ‘Prevention and Management of Musculoskeletal Disorders within the Workplace’– Connect Health

Connect Health, as providers of specialist occupational physiotherapy services with over 25 years’ experience, discuss in this workshop the importance of focussing on the health and wellbeing of your workforce and share ideas and approaches to ensure that employees are motivated, healthy and engaged at work.

a) 'Transformational Change’ – A Case Study in Excellence from Balfour Beatty

 Balfour Beatty are going through a significant period of reorganisation and transformation and cultural change across the UK. This has impacted on the Employee Services Team in Newcastle, hear from the leadership team about the challenges they have faced, reorganising their entire team and ways of working, transforming the culture and deploying significant programmes of improvement across their policies, processes and systems

b) 'Creating Capability’ - Paul Matthews

The modern role of L&D should be focussed on performance rather than training/learning, so L&D people need to know the basics of Performance Consultancy. Despite the hype, a performance consultancy approach is easy to implement. It doesn’t need fancy tools or technology, or expensive changes. It just requires a shift in mind-set, and this seminar will give the basics of that shift, and a takeaway tool/model to start the process. Paul makes ideas come alive with stories, practical tools and tips everyone can understand. This has led to two bestselling books and speaking appearances worldwide.

c) ‘People Make the Place: the importance of organisational values’ – Joanna Cook

Research tells us of the tendency for individuals to be attracted by other individuals’ with similar values-sets, we also know that individuals exhibit higher levels of engagement when they are allowed to live out their core values at work, they seemed to be ‘aligned’ to their organisation. So how do you reach the holy grail? This presentation is a round-up of relevant psychological and HR theory in this area with some practical examples of how to succeed in embedding and measuring values, delivered by Joanna Cook - Chartered Occupational Psychologist.
