Why do we need to talk about mental health in the workplace?

In recent years attitudes towards mental ill health have been improving.  Now, more than ever, it is becoming more acceptable to talk about mental health. But are we doing enough in the workplace? We spend much of our daily lives at work. Not only can the working environment be a factor in our mental health, we should also feel as comfortable talking to colleagues and line mangers about our mental health as we do our physical health.

This is a joint CPD event with Bournemouth University. Speakers will include academics and professionals with expertise in mental health, as well as people with their own personal story to tell.

They will explore what responsibility employers have towards mental health, what support they need to meet that commitment, and how we can encourage a more open dialogue among co‐workers. We will also explore why this is so important.

This event will consider this from different perspectives – as individuals, as businesses / organisations, and the wider societal and economic impact.

As a result of attending this event you will (add more as required):

  • Have an increased empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by those who have poor mental health or mental illnesses, through hearing about lived experiences.
  • Consider the facts and statistics that demonstrate the cumulative impact this has on organisations and therefore the business case for supporting effective support.
  • Recognise the wider impact of the trends we are seeing and what this could mean for society in the future if not addressed.

Refreshments will be served from 17:00hrs with the event starting promptly at 17:30hrs.
