Circle Dance and Making Music Worskhop, 11th July 2019

We will be holding our annual presentation event on Thursday, 11th July 2019 at St Luke’s Community Centre, 90 Central Street, London EC1V 8AJ. This is an open event, it's free to attend, all our friends and supporters are invited.

In the morning we will be running three workshops including Circle Dance and Making Music for People with Dementia from 10.40am (with registration and refreshments from 10.15am) until 11.40am.

Come and join the workshop to experience elements of circle dance and participatory music-making for people with dementia with Liv McLennan, a Dementia Pathfinders Associate and Co-Director of Music for Wellbeing CIC. She will offer practical ideas and signpost to further resources to support you to be able to use circle dance and music in your work.

No previous dance or music experience is necessary.

About the workshop tutor, Liv McLennan:

Liv is a community musician and creative practitioner who believes in the power of music and creative arts for change. She has had a passion for working for people with dementia since her teens, when her grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s-type dementia. After a music degree and time as an Army musician, Liv worked for various charities, including Alzheimer’s Society, developing projects mainly based around peer support and groupwork.

She works with community choirs & singing groups, people with dementia, people with Parkinson’s, and children aged 0-5 and their families. Liv has worked with various organisations, including Westminster Arts, Age Exchange and, South London and Maudsley NHS Trust and Alzheimer’s Society delivering music, movement, reminiscence and cross-arts projects. She is also a trainer in these areas and has run training sessions for community musicians and care workers in how to incorporate these techniques into their work.

Liv plays the cello, Highland Bagpipes and saxophone, and dabbles in ukulele. In her spare time she enjoys Circle Dancing and is also on the board of trustees for Sound Sense, the Professional Association for Community Musicians. She is delighted to have recently moved back to Salisbury, after a very long time in London.

The afternoon's programme will feature presentation of two awards:

  • Margaret Butterworth Awards 2019 recognising excellence in dementia care for care workers, health care assistants and activity organisers
  • John Gregory Williamson Memorial Award 2019 recognising and rewarding one creative project, that is demonstrably improving the lives of people living with dementia and their families.
