About this event

Join us for a relaxed and welcoming evening of creativity, conversation, and community at The Citadel Café. This hands-on photography session, led by Emma Khan—a locally-based landscape photographer—will help you explore the art of capturing the beauty of the Western Heights using just your smartphone.

Whether you're a complete beginner or already enjoy taking photos, this workshop is a chance to learn practical techniques to improve your photography, discover new ways of seeing the landscape, and connect with others in a friendly, supportive setting.

About the event

Emma will guide you through simple but effective ways to get the most out of your smartphone camera, using settings and techniques that make a big difference. You’ll explore how light, composition, and perspective can transform everyday shots into striking images. No fancy equipment needed—just bring your smartphone and your curiosity.

We recommend visiting the Western Heights beforehand. This will give you a head start and something to build on during the session.

And if you’re not feeling creative, that’s okay too! You’re very welcome to join us at The Citadel Café just for tea, biscuits, and a chat.

About the facilitator

Emma Khan is a photographer based in Southeast England and known for her evocative images of landscapes around the world, including Greenland, Svalbard, South America, and the United Kingdom.

Her work focuses on capturing the scale and beauty of our world and she loves encouraging others to find inspiration in their surroundings. Emma hopes to inspire people to reconnect with nature and, in doing so, rediscover their sense of self.

Citadel Sessions is a series of free monthly events where you can explore the Western Heights through history, art, creative writing, and more. Come to one session or join us for the whole series—it’s entirely up to you.

This event is part of English Heritage's Reaching Greater Heights project and Dover District Council's Western Heights Regeneration project.

Using money raised by National Lottery players, The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports projects that connect people and communities with the UK’s heritage. Reaching Greater Heights is made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we have been able to restore historic chalk grasslands at Dover Castle and Western Heights, protect rare wildlife and heritage, and empower local communities through volunteering, learning, and activities.

With support from Historic England and the UK Government, Dover District Council are working to regenerate Dover’s Western Heights—restoring historic views, improving safety, and reconnecting the site with the town through conservation, community engagement and heritage-led regeneration.
