Event description

Description

Citizenship - Where Next?

Join our inaugural panel discussion in memory and honour of the late Judge Khurshid Drabu CBE.

In the first of these annual events, we will examine citizenship against a backdrop of 70 million people displaced in 2018 (as reported by the United Nations Refugee Agency) and the rise of nationalism in politics.

Panel speakers will consider what citizenship means now, and the importance of citizenship in building a fair and inclusive society.

The session will be chaired by broadcaster Mishal Husain under Chatham House rules and she will be joined by Zrinka Bralo, CEO of Migrants Organise; Nitin Sawhney, producer and musician; Hassan Damluji, Deputy Director for Global Policy and Advocacy, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and Riz Ahmed, actor, rapper and activist.

With thanks to the Association of Muslim Lawyers and the Muslim Council of Britain for their support.

Our charity partner

All ticket proceeds and donations will go to our chosen charity partner Young Citizens.

Young Citizens helps young people become active, engaged and motivated citizens, who are able to contribute positively to their communities – whether those communities are local, national or global. We believe that by helping young people play a full part in their communities, we can help strengthen democratic society. At a time when so many of our democratic institutions are under threat, our work is more important than ever.

We are also very grateful for additional donations in advance and at the event itself. Young Citizens have set up a dedicated appeals page https://www.youngcitizens.org/fundraisers/citizenship-where-next to facilitate this.

About Judge Khurshid Drabu

The late Judge Khurshid Hassan Drabu CBE was the most senior Muslim in the judiciary, working in the field of immigration. He was committed to building a fair, cohesive, inclusive and diverse society. He was awarded a CBE for "bringing communities together” following his dedicated community work for over three decades.

He once said: “My inspiration is the future of my children and grandchildren and the nation as a whole. I just hope that one day we will live in a society where there is a better understanding of each other. That is all I seek really.”
