Event description

Description

As part of City Arts’ 40th Anniversary celebrations we’re running an exciting series of Folk Proms showcasing the best in Notts based folk music. We’re delighted to be hosting East Midlands based acoustic duo 'Delicata' ; Rachel Delicata, songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, and Shirley Novak, double bass, backing vocals, guitar and lap steel. Their unique style ranges from Folk, Pop, Blues to Country with a rich mixture of original material and covers that have been re-arranged using acoustic instrumentation.

“A mixture of cherubic looks and delightful voices, totally in tune with the instruments they wield, wickedly raunchy one second, seductive and sexy the next.”

With support from Claire Halliday/John Garner and Les Wilkinson

Delicata

East Midlands based acoustic duo 'Delicata' comprises of Rachel Delicata, Songwriter, vocalist and guitarist, and Shirley Novak, double bass, backing vocals, guitar and lap steel.

Rachel plays live, performing original material as well as covers of folk/country style songs. She plays guitar and is accompanied by Shirley on double bass and guitar which makes for an intimate setting for a journey of sensitive music and song.

Shirley Novak says, “Meeting Rachel Delicata has been a breath of fresh air! She has an ability to paint a picture through her song writing and a mutual appreciation of acoustic instruments such as brush kits, double bass and guitar gave us the basis of a simple sound that reflects Rachel’s music perfectly, she is a joy to work with…”.

Rachel Delicata says “Shirley’s passion and sensitively to music is a true gift. She knows instinctively what my songs should sound like. The work that Shirley and I have done together is the best I have very done in my life. I am proud of our music and proud that we are going to be sharing it”.

City Arts says

This duo are special – this is going to be a wonderfully entertaining gig. Be sure to book early – tickets limited

Claire Halliday and John Garner

Exponents of the diatonic button accordion Claire Halliday and John Garner play with style and emotion.

They have played together in Mortimer's Morris band, which is renowned for its great music and energy.

Claire also plays for Anstey Morris Men, Mutineers, and is part of the team that runs The Poppy Folk Club.

John was a founder member of Mortimer's Morris, and instigated the introduction of Euro tunes for Morris. He went on to found the RBB Band who played mainly Euro tunes at most national festivals. They also went on to record the successful '46, Church Street' CD.

They will play a varied programme of toe tapping tunes and slower atmospheric melodies. Their musical influences include Bruno Le Tron, Marc Peronne, Tref, Naragonia, and of course the brilliant Andy Cutting...amongst many others'

City Arts says:

Claire and John’s playing is mesmeric – each performance piece a meditation, which will move you to a contemplative and beautifully relaxed place just yards from the hustle and bustle of Hockley. A joy to listen to.

Les Wilkinson

Les Wilkinson misspent his youth singing and playing in the folk clubs of the North East of England and the East Neuk of Fife. He now performs regularly with the Trent Navigation Company Shanty Crew and Higgs Bo'sun.

An outstanding performer in his own right, expect a mixture of traditional songs from the Geordie heartland and from all over the British Isles, together with some contemporary folk, accompanied on guitar, banjo or melodeon - or whatever else comes to hand...

City Arts says:

Les is a legend in his own lunchtime, with a vast and diverse repertoire of trad and contemporary folk songs. He is a great friend of City Arts – having given his time and talent on numerous occasions to support our work. His fine voice and lovely playing are a pleasure to hear.
