Event description

Description

As part of City Arts’ 40th Anniversary celebrations we’re running an exciting series of Folk Proms showcasing the best in Notts based folk music. We're proud to present friends of City Arts, Higgs Bo'sun, playing and singing folk music of the British Isles and North America. Higgs Bo'sun is the instrumental core of the shanty crew Trent Navigation Company. Supported by Jenny Bell and Up

Higgs Bo’sun

The members of Higgs Bo’sun form part of the musical core of the Trent Navigation Company Shanty Crew (TNC), and so, as particles of TNC (see where this is going?) they would meet separately to TNC to rehearse the musical accompaniments and arrangements for TNC’s repertoire. They found that they enjoyed singing and playing together and decided to form an entity in their own right singing and playing the folk music they had enjoyed and played in the 60s and 70s. For their City Arts performance they may be a trio or a quartet – who knows? Blink and you’ll miss ‘em.

‘Essentially they’re just a bunch of old ‘uns re-living their folky yoof.’ Radcliffe Clarion

‘This band should dis-band’ The Noise Abatement Society’s in-house journal ‘Shshshshsh’

Their merch stand was rubbish – just a bunch of quarks and photons. I bought some but they didn’t last long.’ Comment from Facebook page.

City Arts says

Higgs (as it is affectionately known by its fan) have graced the City Arts stage before both as the in-house-buskers for Nottingham Light Night, and variously in concert with TNC and on their own. Always a good listen

Jennifer Bell

Jennifer Bell is a songwriter heavily influenced by traditional folk songs and early music. Her melodies are very singable and the lyrics intelligent and imaginative, sometimes with a macabre twist…

Originally with the short-lived but pretty successful ‘80’s folk band ‘Sherwood Rise’ that made the LP of Robin Hood-related songs and tunes ‘From the Wood’, she now performs her songs solo at folk clubs and festivals (has been seen in period costume) accompanying herself on lute or 12-string guitar, and with Wil Walker adding amazing fiddle on some songs.

City Arts says

We’re delighted that Jennifer has agreed to do a short set for us this year. Jennifer’s voice is crystal-clear (like, um, a bell!) and her self-penned songs surprise and delight her audiences. Be sure to catch her set.

UP

'The UP ethos is very simple. We take songs we love and aim to do them justice in our own inimitable folky, funky, four string style.'

Winners, Rising Stars Sunday Session, Ukulele Festival of Scotland 2017

'The sound of contemporary folk poured through ukuleles. Original and dynamic live shows.'

Derby Folk Festival Fringe

City Arts says

‘I’ve seen this amazing act around the folk circuit and they are magical. Clever and adept at what they do. Highly recommended. Don’t miss them’ Norman Randall, Vice-Chair Nottingham City Arts
