Event description

Description

A guided tour of Chelmsford's City Centre waterways, and the sites of proposals to allow navigation of larger craft into the City Centre rivers.

As Chelmsford’s waterway link gains council support, The Chelmer Canal Trust are offering an explanatory walk and talk for those who want to know more about the waterways in Chelmsford, how they work and, importantly, the two current options for linking them. Should Chelmsford have one more lock, or more water frontage and a level link between SpringfieldBasin and the rivers? It now appears that a new lock is the option favoured by council officials.

Originally conceived in 1985, but opposed by past council leadership, a change in the political nature of the City Council has made the link far more likely, but the link may look very different to how some have imagined it.

This event will start with a short illustrated talk in the Chelmsford Canoe Club, after which there will be a guided walk around the important parts of Chelmsford’s waterways infrastructure so that you can see at first hand what we have now, and what we could have in the future.

Learn

  • Where Chelmsford’s history as an inland port can be traced today.
  • How we might maintain desirable water levels in times of both flood and drought.
  • How the passage of boats into the city centre can be facilitated.
  • What types of leisure craft would be able to use the rivers, and how far upstream they could go.
  • What maintains the water level in SpringfieldBasin and Lockside marina.
  • How a link to the Canal would benefit the existing river users like the Chelmsford Canoe Club and the Chelmsford Sea Cadets.

Almost none of the waterways in Chelmsford follow their original natural courses, and much of the heavy engineering we see today, dates from the work done in the 1960s, when priorities were very different. Today, we want well thought out infrastructure projects to improve biodiversity and recreational amenities while still offering robust flood resilience for our homes and businesses.
