Event description

Description

We invite you on a voyage of literary discovery. The City Tales series - short stories set in particular cities - aims to present the reading traveller with important writing from abroad by writers often little-known in the English-speaking world. The tales are expertly translated by well-known writers and translators with an intimate knowledge of the city in question. 'Lisbon Tales' translated by Amanda Hopkinson and 'Barcelona Tales' translated by Peter Bush are the latest titles in this popular series.

'Barcelona Tales' presents a selection of newly translated short stories by 14 writers, many of them Catalan. The stories open up Barcelona in ironic, tragic, and lyrical ways, inviting readers to explore fictional lives and literary styles that reflect the dynamic, conflict-ridden character and history of this great European city.

The combination of cultural influences in Lisbon—Arabian, African, and European—and the city's identity as a great seafaring stronghold, has granted it a unique and spirited legacy. 'Lisbon Tales' reflects this legacy in its vibrant literary selections, from famous names to new voices.

Join literary translators Amanda Hopkinson & Peter Bush and Helen Constantine, the series editor, as they discuss the writers included in the anthologies, their portrayal of Barcelona and Lisbon, and the art of translation.

Amanda Hopkinson is a literary translator, former Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia, and Professor of Literary Translation at City, University of London.

Peter Bush is an award-winning literary translator. He has translated over seventy books from Catalan, French, Portuguese and Spanish.

Helen Constantine taught languages in schools until 2000, when she became a full-time translator. She has published four volumes of translated stories, 'Paris Tales', 'Paris Metro Tales', 'Paris Street Tales' and 'French Tales'. She is general editor of City Tales for Oxford University Press
