CITYPERC Seminar - Bruno Bonizzi - Finance and Global Hierarchies: the persistence and evolution of international financial subordination in the Global South
From structurally higher cost and risks of finance, external vulnerability and financial crises, limited policy space, and the need for costly self-insurance mechanisms, countries in the Global South remain subject to a particularly harsh form of finance's structural power. This presentation explores the emerging research agenda of International Financial Subordination, tracing its theoretical roots and key areas of analysis. Through the case study of the Uganda Development Bank, it shows how high interest rates and currency mismatches severely constraint the availability of green and development finance.
