Civic Voice Design Awards study tour - Slowing the Flow, Pickering
Thu 23 March 2017, 12:30 – 17:00 GMT
About ‘Slowing the Flow’
Following a series of devastating floods, two Pickering & District Civic Society members collaborated with Oxford, Durham and Newcastle Universities and hit on a winning solution to flood prevention by working with nature to ‘slow the flow’, storing water upstream to prevent it flooding the town.
Civic Voice Design Award judges felt it worthy of a special prize, calling it “an outstanding achievement for Pickering & District Civic Society, who should be incredibly proud”. The judges felt that the scheme sets a precedent in presenting an innovative way of looking at the landscape as infrastructure with huge potential to be replicated across the country in other flood threatened areas.
At this study tour, you will:
hear from Pickering & District Civic Society about the ‘warts and all’ battles of the scheme
learn how university academics worked with the local community and practitioners to develop a cost-effective flood scheme
discover how it has influenced other communities and high level policy makers.
visit flood defence sites by minibus and on foot to see for yourself how ‘slowing the flow’ works.
Come and join us to find out more about the Civic Voice Design Awards, learn from those who have used great design to make a positive contribution to their community, and explore what great design could do for your community.
