Event Details

As host and organiser, Helen Gavin welcomes you to this event, on behalf of the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management’s Central Southern Branch, and the Environmental Change Institute, Oxford University.  This event will focus on SuDS: their rural and urban applications. Each presentation will be approximately 20 minutes long, allowing time afterwards for questions and discussions.

“The Stroud Rural Sustainable Drainage Project: three years of natural flood management in the Stroud Valleys”

Chris Uttley, Rural SuDS Project Officer, Stroud District Council

Chris' talk will describe the work to implement natural flood management within the 260km catchment of the Stroud River Frome. In particular, it will look at how the project works with local landowners and community groups, what the project is actually building, the evidence for the project, and finally look at the lessons learned so far.

Using SuDS Studio™ to map retrofit opportunities in urban spaces”

Joshua Arnott, Environmental Scientist, Atkins

Josh’s talk will introduce SuDS Studio™, a GIS application to identify opportunities for retrofitting  sustainable drainage systems in urban and semi-urban environments, which was used to examine and map SuDS retrofit for the Greater London Authority and Thames Water.  This work was commissioned to inform the GLA Sustainable Drainage Action Plan, help Thames Water model its strategic sewer capacity and provide information for Borough officers to use in their day-to-day work.  The talk will cover how the Tool was developed, its application to London and outputs, including cost-effective solutions for each location examined.
