Event description

Description

cJAM: Humanities is an exciting showcase event which enables our talented students in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences to meet face-to-face with senior industry professionals, to share ideas, make connections and pitch for opportunities.

This is a full-day event and we would be delighted if you would consider joining us - it presents a great opportunity for people in the industry to meet the talent of the future.

The event includes:

• Networking breakfast
• Guest speakers
• Industry Q&A panel
• Networking lunch
• Speed pitching
• Awarding of placements

As an industry guest, you will play an integral role in the event. For the two-hour speed pitching session, where you will get to meet 1:1 with up to twelve students, we ask that you come with the offer of at least one work placement ideally lasting one week or more. Alternatively, a one-day shadowing opportunity will also be fantastic. At the event, you get to judge the student pitches and award your placement(s) to the student(s) who impresses you the most.

This is the first year for the cJAM: Humanities event, however the cJAM event format has been long established at UCLan. At last year's cJAM events in journalism, media, performance and law our students secured 320 placements with a range of employers including the BBC, ITV, MUTV, Curious Minds, The Lowry, Warwick Arts Centre, Super Slow Way, Weber Shandwick, TT Games, Wash Media and Corporation Pop.

To get a flavour of the cJAM event format look at last year's videos:
cJAM: Journalism video
cJAM: Media video
cJAM: Performance video
cJAM: Law video

With humanities graduates appealing to a broad range of sectors, it is so important that our students see where their skills can take them and get a taste of the best career opportunities open to them. Through accepting our invitation, you will help enormously in achieving this.

FAQs

Potted career history and photo
Once registered we will need a short biography and photo. This is for the cJAM event programme. The photo should be a mid-shot of yourself (head and shoulders) and the biography 100 words max, written in third person. Deadline date: Friday 11 December.

Placements
We ask that you come with the offer of at least one placement. Assuming this will be unpaid, the placement should last for no longer than four weeks. A week is the ideal length but if this isn’t possible, a one-day shadowing opportunity would also be great.

Which students will be pitching for placements at this cJAM event?
Final year undergraduate and postgraduate students from the following subject areas will be pitching for placements: BSL Deaf Studies / Creative Writing / English Language / English Literature / Film, Media and Pop Culture / History / Liberal Arts / Philosophy / Politics / Public Services / Religion, Culture and Society / Sociology.

Free parking
You can request a parking space when registering. If this applies, use the University’s Victoria car park (sat nav: Victoria Street, PR1 7AY). The Media Factory is a two minute walk from the car park.

Public transport
The Media Factory is a 15 minute walk from Preston Train Station. For more information, please see this link.

Free event
There is no cost to attend this event and breakfast, lunch and refreshments throughout the day will be provided.

Late arrival or early departure
This is a full-day event and we would appreciate your presence from 9.30am until 4.30pm. If this isn’t possible, please let us know in the specific requirements section when registering.
