Start Point: Harrowslack National Trust car park
Length: 9.1km (5.7miles) with 320m (1050ft) of ascent
Time: 4.5 hours (approx.)
Grade: 4 (see grade description below)
This walk begins from the Harrowslack NT car park and follows a well made track along the Windermere shore line north for 3km to Belle Grange. Here the route turns uphill and there is a short but steep climb which includes cobbled sections which are slippy when wet. The route then turns south along Claife Heights with exellent views over Windermere and the eastern fells before descending to Far Sawrey and back to the start via the Claife Viewing Station. Originally a Georgian building, it offers pamoramic views of the lake with tinted windows to recreate the landscape under different seasonal conditions.
Grade 4 walks are generally full day walks that include hilly ground and require a reasonable level of fitness. You might encounter climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces may be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, and you may also find yourself walking up irregular steps, over stiles or through narrow gates and gaps.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
