Event description

Description

"We’ve looked together at the stormclouds gathering over Grounds of Appeal which are too long, rambling, waffling, warbling, all four, and/or which otherwise disappoint. What’s the best control mechanism? Is it tough Criminal Procedure Rule vocabulary? Is it a Court of Appeal Criminal Division judgment or three, from the top, reiterating disapprobation? Is it a Criminal Practice Direction in firm tones? All the above?"

These are the words of Lady Justice Anne Rafferty, our speaker to introduce this topic. She was a criminal practitioner until she joined the High Court bench in 2000, moving to the Court of Appeal in 2011. Since 2014, she has been Chairman of the Board of the Judicial College, responsible for training over 36,000 judicial office-holders. She will discuss what style of communication works best in court, not only when advocates address the judge but also when judges address court users.

There is no charge to attend. As usual, non-members are welcome to try one meeting before they join Clarity, but Clarity members have priority when booking.

After you register, you will receive full details of the venue and agenda.
