Class Struggle and the Law: An evening in conversation with Lord Hendy KC
Overview
About this event
As one of the leading figures in the struggle for trade union rights, Lord Hendy KC (Honorary Professor UCL Laws, Old Square Chambers, Institute of Employment Rights) will reflect on his remarkable life in the law in conversation with Professor Keith Ewing (KCL, Institute of Employment Rights). The event will be chaired by Mrs Justice Eady DBE, formerly of Old Square Chambers and now a High Court judge.
During the 1980s, faced by hostile legislators and hostile judges, Lord Hendy was in the vanguard of the fight for freedom of association and social justice in the courts. This also included working in solidarity with colleagues for international trade union rights, including the landmark decision Wilson v UK. He has appeared in most of the leading industrial relations cases of the last forty years. He is now a peer and continues to advocate for workers and trade unions in the Lords.
Lord Hendy will discuss his life as Counsel and Peer, reflecting back on the successes and the challenges of securing justice for workers in the courts and the legislature. He will also provide insights into the Employment Rights Bill and the future of labour law in the face of existential challenges. This will be an unmissable evening to listen to a legend of British labour law. The topics have never been so pressing.
