Orpheus the Argonaut
Professor Athanassios Vergados (Newcastle University)
Orpheus is well known in Greek myth for his descent to the Underworld in order to retrieve his wife Euridice and as the legendary singer who had the power to enchant the inanimate nature. This talk will focus on a different aspect of his mythological career, his participation in the Argonautic expedition as recounted in the Argonautica by Apollonius of Rhodes (3rd c. BC)., where Orpheus’ contribution as a singer and religious expert is crucial for the success of the Argonauts.
