Join us for an unmissable conversation between Torisheju Dumi, multidisciplinary artist and UAL Honorary Doctorate recipient, and Claudine Rousseau, Dean of the School of Design and Technology at London College of Fashion.

Torisheju’s rise from self-made design graduate to one of fashion’s most visionary new voices has redefined what it means to create outside the system. Her radical silhouettes, spiritual references, and unapologetic hybridity have shaken up Paris Fashion Week and beyond.

Together, Claudine and Torisheju will explore themes of:

  • Non-linearity and forging your own path
  • Hybridity, heritage, and storytelling through dress
  • Institutional change, recognition, and resistance
  • Advice for the next generation of creators

This live in-conversation is open to all UAL students and kicks off a new academic year with bold thinking, boundary-pushing dialogue, and real inspiration.

Date/time: Tuesday 23 September, 3 – 4pm

Location: Lecture Theatre (M01), London College of Fashion, 105 Carpenter's Road, E20 2AR

About Torishéju Dumi

Torishéju Dumi creates both womenswear and menswear under her eponymous label, TORISHÉJU, launched to redefine the boundaries of contemporary fashion. Born in North-West London, her early exposure to fashion came through her mother’s passion for 19th-century design and art, which filled their family home. Her Nigerian-Brazilian, Catholic upbringing also plays a pivotal role in her work, with religion, tradition, and spirituality serving as enduring themes.

A graduate of the BA (Hons) Menswear course at London college of Fashion March 2018 and the MA Fashion course at Central Saint Martins,March 2021. Torishéju is also an alumna of Lee Alexander McQueen’s Sarabande Foundation. Before completing her MA, she gained invaluable experience at celebrated brands such as CÉLINE under Phoebe Philo’s direction, as well as Ann Demeulemeester, Giles Deacon, and Sibling London. Through TORISHÉJU, Torishéju Dumi seeks to expand prevailing notions of Black artistry. Her work delves into the folklore and traditions of her heritage, presenting a deeply personal vision. Instead of relying on conventional cultural signifiers, her silhouettes adopt abstract, free-associative forms, using surrealism and the subconscious to amplify identity.

At its core, TORISHÉJU is an obsessive study of shape, form, and fabric. The brand embodies a timeless state of mind, blending eternity with a sense of urgency. Each design challenges the cold familiarity of the modern world, introducing friction and vitality through surreal reinterpretations of form and structure. Her work has been aquired by the Met Museum- Costume Instiute and most recently the Victoria and Albert Museum. In 2025, she receives an Honorary Doctorate from UAL for her outstanding contribution to culture and creativity.
