Description

Aim: To enhance and develop existing knowledge and skills in relation to wound management in Primary Care.

Objectives: By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy and physiology of the skin
  • Explain the processes involved in tissue breakdown and wound healing
  • Discuss the range of factors which contribute to tissue breakdown and wound healing
  • Demonstrate awareness of the signs and symptoms of wound infection and sepsis
  • Demonstrate the ability to plan, implement and evaluate appropriate wound care plans
  • Make decisions on the appropriate dressings for a range of types of wound
  • Develop decision-making strategies to clarify the optimal management of specific wound types, by reviewing case studies.
  • Understand the definition of a leg ulcer, the difference in management of a venous and arterial ulcer and when/how to refer for Doppler Assessment and compression bandaging and tissue viability services.
  • To develop a better understanding of the factors that contributes to the development of leg ulceration and the application of the proven treatment that can improve clinical outcomes.
  • To raise awareness of Nurses responsibility to act within their code of professional conduct and when delegating a task.
