Event Details

Driving translation of mathematical and statistical research advances into high value applications in industry is vital to unlocking key societal and economic challenges in clean growth and sustainability.

This three-day Study Group held at Nottingham University (29th April – 1st May) will bring mathematical science researchers from across the UK to work on a number of industry problems over three intensive workshop days to come up with solutions to industry problems from areas as diverse as agriculture, food production and biotechnology, resource efficiency, water and sustainability.

The importance of data science, artificial intelligence, mathematical and statistical modelling at multi scale are key strengths of the UK research base, and can be transformational when applied to industrial problems.

This is a call is for companies large and small to indicate their interest in posing a problem to the Study Group. Please send an email to Matt Butchers and Markus Owen detailing your interest and we will then work with you to develop it into a potential problem statement for the Study Group.

This Study Group is fully funded by the University of Nottingham Leverhulme Doctoral Scholarships programme “Modelling and Analytics for a Sustainable Society” with Support from  Innovate UK’s Knowledge Transfer Network; as such, there is no cost for industry to bring a problem to the Group.

KTN along with other partners have previously run two Mathematical Study Groups with Industry at Bath University and the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in the Agri-Food area helping companies from diverse organisations as cocoa growth, decision support for pig and cow farmers, crisp manufacture, orange growth, hydroponic optimisation and others.

The First Agri-Food Study Group with Industry was held in January 2017, and a write-up can be found here.

Study Group Format

Representatives from industry will present their problems on the first day. Researchers in mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science and related areas will work together towards practical solutions, and first steps in approaching problems. Early stage career academics, Ph.D students, and postdocs are particularly welcome.

Why take part in the Study Group?

  • Get new problems
  • Expand research portfolio
  • Vital contact with industry
  • Meeting academics from different fields

  • Get new solutions
  • Access to highly qualified individuals
  • Written report

Costs to Take Part

The majority of the Study Group is paid for by the sponsoring organisation (University of Nottingham, and KTN), however to cover some costs, there will be a nominal registration fee of £30 for non-Nottingham participants. This fee will cover accommodation and meals for the three days. We also ask that travel costs should be sought from attendees’ own institutions.

At this stage, the call is for companies to send problems to us: registration details for participants will be available soon.
