Event description
Come and discuss how communities and civil society can address climate change and make a difference

About this Event

Join us in this meeting in the House of Commons when Feryal Clark the new MP from Enfield North will host a meeting on Climate Change and The Role Of Civil Society.

With ten years to make a difference in addressing the emergency of climate change the role of civil society is important. Change cannot just be left to national and local governments as climate change affects the community as a whole.

Other speakers are

Rebecca Byrnes is a Policy Analyst at the Grantham Research Institute at the LSE with a focus on the key ingredients for an effective transition to a resilient, low carbon economy. Rebecca provides policy support to researchers exploring: how to manage a just transition, climate legislation and governance, and whole-of-economy approaches to building climate resilience in developing communities. She also has experience on the importance of civil society involvement in Australia where they were faced with an intransigent Government.

Nick Dearden is the Director of Global Justice Now. He is also the public face of the organisation. Nick started his career at War on Want where he became a senior campaigner. He went on to be corporates campaign manager at Amnesty International UK. As director of the Jubilee Debt Campaign, he built strong relationships with campaigners in the global south. He helped win a new law to stop Vulture Funds from using UK courts to squeeze huge debt payments out of poor countries

We will also have two short case studies one from Vicki Pite a Councillor in the London Borough of Enfield and who was responsible for that Council declaring a climate emergency. We will look at how she has developed that work by helping to set up a civil society forum to address climate change We will also have with us Camila Berens who with others has set up a community energy initiative in Lewisham that combats climate change as well as addresses climate justice.

If we are going to succeed and put pressure on governments, on businesses and on other organisations then it is vital for civil society organisations to take a lead.

In this meeting we will discuss how we can do this and look at some examples. There will be plenty of time for audience discussion and comments so we hope this will be a valuable meeting.

This meeting is being organised by the Enfield Climate Action Forum (EnCaf) and Globalnet21. EnCaf has just been set up in one Borough as a Civil Society Forum consisting of over 50 organisations collaborating to raise awareness and take action locally. GlobalNet 21 holds regular House of Commons meetings and was set up to attract new audiences to discuss the big issues of our day globally and nationally
