Event description
Join Harriet Kingaby from Media Bounty for a brief exploration of climate disinformation. What is it? Who's using it? How do we tackle it?

About this event

In 2018, the UN's Global Compact on Migration was derailed by disinformation from the far right, which linked it to toxic immigration debates worldwide, and spread lies about its outcomes.

In 2021, our research has revealed similar groups using similar tactics, but focused on climate change. Climate misinformation is a threat to COP26, but if we're prepared, we can fight back.

This talk will look at the dirty tactics used by bad actors online, and outline how we can fight back. From greenwashing oil companies, to the climate deniers weaponising COVID, you'll leave this talk with a better understanding of the problem, and what techniques we can use to reach those susceptible to misinformation.

About Harriet:

Harriet is an activist working at the intersection between digital advertising, human rights and climate change. Her role as Insights Director at ethical advertising company, Media Bounty, concentrates on the fight back against climate misinformation.

She co-founded The Conscious Advertising Network with Jake Dubbins of Media Bounty in 2018 and has since seen it gain international recognition, partner with ISBA and the UN, and grow to over 140 members from O2 to Accenture Interactive. She’s a former Mozilla Fellow, working with Consumers International to map the opportunities and impacts of AI enhanced advertising, globally.

Lunchtime talks

This is part of a series of 60 minute webinars and discussions for Friends of the Earth staff, local group members and Climate Action Group activists. These talks are designed to stimulate thinking and increase awareness of different approaches to campaigning and the issues other campaigns are tackling.

They might not always be directly related to our core campaigns at Friends of the Earth. They might not even be at lunchtime! But they will give us food for thought more broadly about challenges and opportunities facing the environmental movement.

During this webinar we will use:

  • Powerpoint

Please let us know via the booking form if you have any accessibility requirements and if booking the session is difficult for you get in touch with us on community@foe.co.uk for help.
