About this event:

Welcome to Carbon13’s webinar for founders with scientific backgrounds who are passionate about climate innovation and want to use their research and knowledge to build a startup to reduce GHG emissions.

Together with Berlin 1 founder Dr Katharine Shapcott, we talk about how the transition from science to entrepreneurship succeeds, the challenges scientists face, but also what scientists bring to the table that enriches entrepreneurship as a whole.

Dr Katharine Shapcott has a diverse background in neuroscience; now having switched into climate tech. With strong expertise in data analysis, experimental design, AI and machine learning Katharine has joined Carbon13 in April 23 for Berlin Cohort 1 and is now Co-Founder and CTO at VoltVogel - VoltVogel separates EV charging from parking, bringing the charging station autonomously to the vehicles, and using renewable energy to support the grid and reduce the carbon footprint.

Our Why:

Carbon13 is a response to the climate emergency. We recognise that despite the increasing number of commitments to net zero emissions, there is still uncertainty on how to deliver. There are existing technologies to deploy but we also require innovation to reinvent the rules and therefore reimagine what is possible.

Carbon13 is not just about investing in a few startups, it is about harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit. That means engaging with academia, business, policy makers, NGOs, consumers, new standards and finance. We need pioneers across the spectrum and that is where our community is critical to the success of our ventures and the transformation we need to see.

Carbon13 in numbers

  • 64 startups launched since 2021
  • 50% of the ventures are software, 50% science or hardware based
  • 75 potential cofounders on every cohort
  • 90+% of each cohort forms a cofounding team within weeks
  • 100s of domain experts, carbon experts, entrepreneurs in residence
  • 10 million tonnes of CO2e emissions every year. We only launch startups that have the potential to reduce emissions by 10 million tonnes
