Event description
A practical course for physiotherapists: Using a yoga-based approach for sports rehabilitation, treatment and training.

About this Event

This two-day course introduces physiotherapists to using a yoga-based approach for treatment, rehabilitation and training with their patients. There is increasing evidence supporting the benefit of using yoga to help musculoskeletal conditions; returning from injury, finding the balance between strength, flexibility and stability and connecting movement to the breath to aid recovery and performance. Our patients are increasingly turning to yoga and other complimentary therapies, as physiotherapists we are ideally placed to assist this through assessment and diagnosis and progressing their movement and activity levels safely and effectively. We are an important link and have an increasing role in the growing movement of yoga in healthcare.

This course will cover:

Yoga in context; using a yoga approach to support physiotherapy treatment;

• Physical practice and movement – Asana

• Breath work – Pranayama – autonomic nervous system regulation

• Meditation and Mindfulness – relaxation and rest

A sequence of yoga postures to provide strength, stability and flexibility for sports including rowing, hockey, running, football and other kicking sports.

• Practicing these postures to understand how they feel personally

• Developing the skills to safely teach and modify these postures for patients - considering alignment, available range of movement, breath and function

• To clinically reason which postures are appropriate for your patients rehabilitation and training programme

Working with the breath;

• Assessing a patient’s breathing style

• Facilitating and teaching breath work to help manage stress responses, aid relaxation, improve performance

A review of the latest research and evidence for yoga in healthcare;

An introduction to the many different styles of yoga so you can safely recommend classes for your patients;

Learning outcomes:

Develop a clinically based approach to include yoga as part of your treatment plan for patients, on a 1-2-1 basis and in small group setting.

The ability to demonstrate and teach a sequence of physical movement and postures.

The ability to deliver a short breath or meditation practice to patients.

A greater awareness of your own body, mind and breath link.

Yoga is experiential, so you also learn how yoga can help us as therapists to look after ourselves better.

Specifically for this course we will develop a sequence of postures and breathwork that will work for you and your patients/teams and that you can put into practice straight away.

There is a large practical element of the course so please wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in.
