Event description

Description

The Quilters of the Gee’s Bend made quilts from old clothes. They hold layered meaning and are celebrated as abstract masterpieces. Taking these dynamic pieces as our starting point we will explore composition, scale, colour, contrast, texture placement, simple piecing, layering and stitching of ‘found’ cloth.

There will be an opportunity to work collaboratively as well as individually exploring the slow craft process of piecing and quilting, collaborative making and documenting, sharing ‘cloth stories’ and making new ones.

You will make a series of experimental samples to use as a starting point for future work.

The course aims to encourage playfulness and an experimental approach to making. It is suitable for beginners with an interest in textiles but a basic knowledge of hand sewing would be useful.

Basic materials e.g. needles and thread will be provided.

To bring: Fabric scissors, 2 x previously worn garments, or charity shop finds to unpick and repurpose (one plain, one patterned), any scrap fabrics, old sheets, blankets or thick fabrics to be used for wadding (these could be sourced from home or a second hand /charity shop), any other sewing materials or equipment you would especially like to use.

Costs: £90
Days: 2 days
Times: 10.30 – 16:30
Dates: 5 & 12 November
Room: Red room
Maximum: 10
