About this event

  • 3 hours

After a few turbulent years for the economy, many of us are choosing to extend our properties rather than move house but what does this actually entail? If you’re interested in extending your house, this informal talk will help you to better understand the process before embarking on your building project and will give you food for thought with regards to the impact of your extension on the resale of your house in the future.Building an extension has become very popular but people are often caught out in terms of underestimating how much is involved in a building project regardless of its scale. Our panel of experts including an architect, builder and estate agent will talk through the process step-by-step from conception to completion and will highlight some of the key considerations to bear in mind.

Top and tailed with some purely social time, this event will also give you a chance to catch up with friends and meet some new ones who are going through similar experiences to you.

Our expert panel will provide answers to the following questions:

  • Is building an extension worth it? Will the investment ensure a better resale price?
  • Are there certain features that are more likely to make my investment worthwhile?
  • How much does the average extension cost?
  • What is the process from initial architectural plans to completed build?
  • What are the key roles involved?
  • How long does an extension usually take?
  • What are the pros and cons of using an architect vs a builder for the design?
  • What are the key aspects that I need to think about before engaging an architect?
  • How can I find an local architect?
  • What does the planning process involve? How long should I allow for planning permission
  • What are the most common issues that lead to planning permission being declined?
  • What are the key considerations when choosing a builder?
  • How many builders should I get to quote?
  • Should I get a building contract? What are the best templates to use?
  • What should I expect to pay in terms of a deposit?
  • How are payments normally scheduled?
  • What should I expect in terms of interaction with contractors through the building works
  • What should I do if I’m unhappy about any of the contractors?
