CM @: Bodleian Libraries Book Storage Facility, Swindon. 30th March
As part of the 'Collection Management @' series of events, we are pleased to offer the following free event:
Visit to the Bodleian Libraries Book Storage Facility (BSF) in Swindon with lunch.
Thursday 30th March
This is an exciting opportunity to visit the Bodleian's Book Storage Facility to learn more about operations there and how this impacts on services:
In October 2010, the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford unveiled a new £26-million Book Storage Facility (BSF), capable of holding 13 million volumes on 153 miles of shelving.
The warehouse, in South Marston, near Swindon, has been built to store the lower-usage items from the Libraries’ collections that had overwhelmed the existing bookstacks and required additional temporary storage in various locations in and outside Oxford. These collections have now been brought together at the BSF, including books, maps, manuscripts, microfilms, periodicals and newspapers primarily from the 18th century onwards. Collections are available to be requested by readers in Oxford and delivered a maximum of 24 hours later.
Lunch will be provided, sponsored by Jisc, providing opportunities for discussion and debate with colleagues from the collection management community.
Morning (10am - 12.30pm) OR afternoon (1.30pm - 4pm) session available: please book one slot.
Introductory presentation followed by tour of the facility and time for questions.
Lunch will be provided from 12.30pm to 1.30pm allowing delegates for both sessions to meet and talk about all things collection management.

Information for travelling by public transport: if you are arriving in Swindon by train, the BSF is a 15 minute bus ride from Swindon bus station on the 66 bus to Oxford. The bus station is a five minute walk from the railway station and the BSF is a three minute walk from the bus stop in Stratton Park (opposite Sainsbury’s). The buses run at least every 30 minutes (more frequently at peak times) and the fare is £2 single or £3.50 return.
We suggest some delegates may be able to share a taxi from the station. Unfortunately this cannot be arranged by the organisers.
Information for delegates driving: there is free parking on site.
