11.30–1.00 Sharing and open discussion about our individual and common research interests

Round robin: everyone has a few minutes to talk about what you are working on currently, individually and/or collaboratively

Open discussion on themes and interests that connect us and potential links

1.00–2.00 lunch break (make your own arrangements: bring sandwiches/find nearby place)

Afternoon session: Working with & updating our research areas; and future directions

2.00–c.3.30 Informal 'Open Space' meeting on working with, updating and refining CMNH's thematic research areas in relation to research interests of current (including new) members.

There will be seven tables dedicated to each of our six current research areas plus a wildcard table for ideas that don't fit any of these. Participants choose which of the seven tables you want to join for a smaller group discussion about that research area, led by a chairperson who is closely involved in it. The discussions will focus on three questions:

In what ways do you see your work engaging with this research area?

How might this research area be updated/reconfigured to address new interests and links?

Do you see any thematic overlaps between this research area and our others?

There will be three time slots of c.20 minutes each and you will be able to move to another table in each time slot (or stay where you are).

The existing research areas (and chairs) are:

1. History and cultural memory of twentieth-century world wars. (Kristin O'Donnell)

2. The Northern Ireland Troubles and peace process: legacies, silences and memories in conflict transformation. (Graham Dawson)

3. Negotiating 'complex temporalities' in post-conflict spaces: History, memory and cultural geography after war and conflict. (Struan Gray/Fearghus Roulston tbc)

4. 'Race' and representation: The politics of history, memory and reparation. (Cathy Bergin tbc)

5. Heritage in the twenty-first century. (Cathy Palmer tbc)

6. Medical histories, memories and narratives. (Deborah Madden)

7. Wildcard table (Sam Carroll): any suggestions about developing a new research areas which brings together a viable cluster of researchers and interests? about collaboration with another network/centre/organisation/institution, including ideas about how we might pragmatically develop that link? for future symposia and seminar themes? for visiting speakers, for Visiting Professors? about anything else we need to think about?

Afterwards chairs will report back on the discussions to the full group.

c. 3.30 break

c.4.00–5.00 Taking things forward

The CMNH website: (how) do we use the website? what is its role outward-facing? how are our research areas represented? how might live projects be made more visible? how might the website be revised in light of our conversations today?

Making our ideas happen: how can members get involved in planning and organising future events (seminar series, symposia, visiting speakers, visiting professors)? how might CMNH resources support your proposals? how to take ideas forward to the Steering Group?

5.00 End of proceedings / head for a pub

6.30 Dinner in Al Duomo’s, 7 Pavilion Buildings (covered by CMNH)
