Co-collaboration: Building Community Audiences for Independent Film

Film Hub Wales members can explore how to build authentic connections with communities in this session with WHALE Arts.

Are you working with local community partners to collaborate on film screenings? Do you want to create meaningful film experiences but struggle with low attendance, have difficulty finding the right films or organisations to work with? This session will explore some of the challenges that many cinemas are facing when attempting to build authentic connections with communities who might not otherwise attend, as well as potential solutions. The session will be led by Local Cinema Coordinator Morvern Cunningham.

Themes will include:

  • Working with community members and groups to present co-curated film screenings,
  • Challenging mindsets - 'rather than you come to us, we'll come to you',
  • Quality of experience over quantity of audience.

About Local Cinema Network

Local Cinema is a network of community cinemas based in Edinburgh, supported by the City of Edinburgh Council. They support film screenings co-curated with and for local communities across a range of community spaces in the city, including WHALE Arts; North Edinburgh Arts, Duncan Place Community Hub, Out of the Blue Drill Hall, Space @ Broomhouse Hub, Craigmillar Now and The Crannie Community Hub. In 2025, their Local Resistance touring programme will celebrate local stories of self-organising and solidarity, supported by Film Hub Scotland.

This event is exclusively for members of Film Hub Wales, and members of Film Hubs around the UK (limited spaces).

Membership: If you are not yet a member of FHW, you can join for free here.

Cydweithio: Adeiladu Cynulleidfaoedd Cymunedol ar gyfer Ffilmiau Annibynnol

Ydych chi'n gweithio gyda phartneriaid cymunedol lleol i gydweithio ar ddangosiadau ffilmiau? Ydych chi am greu profiadau ffilm ystyrlon ond yn cael trafferth gyda phresenoldeb isel, yn ei chael hi’n anodd dod o hyd i'r ffilmiau neu'r sefydliadau cywir i gydweithio â nhw? Bydd y sesiwn yma’n archwilio rhai o'r heriau y mae llawer o sinemâu yn eu hwynebu wrth geisio meithrin cysylltiadau ystyrlon gyda chymunedau na fyddai fel arall yn mynychu, yn ogystal ag atebion posib. Caiff y sesiwn ei harwain gan y Cydlynydd Sinema Lleol Morvern Cunningham.

Bydd themâu'n cynnwys:

  • Gweithio gydag aelodau a grwpiau o'r gymuned i gyflwyno dangosiadau ffilm wedi'u cyd-guradu,
  • Meddylfryd heriol – ‘yn hytrach na chi’n dod atom ni, fe ddown ni atoch chi'
  • Ansawdd y profiad dros faint y gynulleidfa
