📅 Thursday 23 Jan: Workshop with Sophie Huckfield
❓ If technology is the answer, then what is the question?
Applying a multidisciplinary approach participants will spend the day composing a production inspired by the fiction’s employed by science and technology industries. Exploring how tech solutionism is used to address complex social issues.
Participants will work with a range of methods such as moulding and casting, concrete poetry, forum theatre techniques, scriptwriting and performing in order to collectively unpick the language and branding employed by corporations around the ‘techno fix’ and the myths of unlimited growth. Building from this we will explore how we can subvert these methods and come up with our own ‘ethics charter’ around technological developments.
The workshop seeks to challenge the dominant viewpoint which positions technology as the only tool to combat complex social and political issues, whilst ignoring inequalities and the environmental impact technology can reinforce.
🎨 Working at the intersection of craft, design and engineering, Sophie Huckfield is a transdisciplinary artist and engineer, based between London and Birmingham. She employs traditional and experimental modes of production to explore materials and making processes, producing sculpture, functional objects and writings. Previously, she was the first female Engineering Technician for the School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Birmingham. Alongside working in the creative industries from aerospace to animation.
