Co-production Opportunities in China

a workshop

sponsored by Shanghai Media Group

with participation of associates from the BBC and Royal Shakespeare Theatre

  • How can co-production between the UK and Chinese TV and performance industries be increased and improved?

  • How are Chinese media policies changing the commercial environment?

  • What are Chinese TV channels and VOD platforms looking for from foreign producers?

I write to invite you to raise these and related issues with Ms Wang Jianjun, President of Shanghai Media Group, at a workshop in London on 21 October 2015. She is looking forward to hearing your views on these matters, and help shape SMG’s future relationship with the UK television industry. Ms Wang is keen to foster co-production. To this end she will provide an overview on what sorts of content UK production companies can pitch to the SMG’s family of channels.

Ms Wang will be accompanied by senior associates from Alibaba, SMG's television companies and SMG’s theatrical divisions. Two case studies will be presented (including one regarding SMG/Royal Shakespeare Theatre). There will also be a briefing from a policy expert about current media policy.

The event takes place at the University of Westminster¹s Regent Campus, between 4pm and 6 pm and will conclude with a reception from 6pm to 7.30pm. It is being organised by the China Media Centre, with the assistance of the office of Lord Wei.

We hope very much that you are able to attend. Places are limited to 60 guests. Please let us know by 15 October so we can ensure your place will be kept.

The workshop will be in English. If you would like the assistance of a bilingual student during the proceedings, please tell us by 15 October, and we shall endeavour to provide one.

The event takes place at the University of Westminster’s Regent Campus, in the Fyvie Hall between 4pm and 6 pm and will conclude with a reception from 6pm to 7:30pm

Yours sincerely,

Professor Hugo De Burgh

Director, China Media Centre, University of Westminster

CHINA MEDIA CENTRE

Connecting the creative and culture industries in China and the UK

连结中英两国文化创意产业的纽带

The China Media Centre is based in the Communications and Media Research Institute of the University of Westminster, the United Kingdom’s leading research unit for media. It was launched in 2005 by Sun Yusheng, Vice-President of China Central Television, and Jeremy Paxman, Presenter of BBC Newsnight, in 2005.

The Centre marks the University’s commitment to the understanding of China, and to extending our international research on the media. China is daily more influential in the world, economically, politically and culturally. Its media have played important parts in the extraordinary changes that have taken place within China since 1978 and are now establishing themselves around the world, as China’s eyes and voice.
