Event description

Description

Our two-day Coaching 'At Risk' Young People training course supports practitioners to promote resilience and prevent the development of mental health problems in vulnerable young people through coaching and strengths-based approaches.

Background Information

The development of resilience and wellbeing underpins the prevention of problems for vulnerable young people. This course is aimed at practitioners that deliver direct work with young people who may be at risk of, or are struggling with poor mental health, due to vulnerabilities and challenging situations they face. The training develops practitioners’ ability to use effective coaching relationships, skills and processes in their work with young people.

Through this training, practitioners will learn how to support young people to develop perspective, self-regulation, self-awareness and motivation to find their own solutions to challenging situations. This builds resilience that can be harnessed by young people, helping them achieve their potential.
Supporting the development of young people’s strengths, wellbeing and resilience provides a cost-effective approach to early prevention, that has positive outcomes in a range of life domains, such as family, relationships, education, employment, housing and health.

Underpinning Evidence

Coaching is evidenced to be the most effective way of providing support to develop resilience. Resilience is an important area of psychology research within the field of Positive Psychology. This training utilises research and applied practice from both positive psychology and evidence-based coaching. These approaches have been adapted and made accessible and researched to understand how they effectively support the development of resilience in young people. This integrated approach has been demonstrated to increase self-awareness, self-regulation, interpersonal skills, wellbeing and positive outcomes for vulnerable young people and provide a proactive approach to prevention.

The training integrates strategies that include solution focused coaching, development of helpful thinking skills, raising emotional and self-awareness, development of positive interpersonal and communication skills, strengths based approaches and goal striving behaviour.
