The Details
Coach training – January
Aims of the training:
To understand what coaching is and when it should be used in the workplace
To identify the benefits to coaching
To introduce the four elements to the GROW model
The 2 half day sessions will cover the concept of coaching, its differences to training and mentoring and the whole school benefits to coaching. The participants will explore the impact of active listening, and how this encourages the coaching process, and the core skills required. Sir John Whitmore’s GROW coaching model will be introduced, with an activity around great questions to use for each stage of the conversation. After lunch, we will introduce some skills practice via a variety of activities, allowing participants to practice their skills in a safe environment in small groups and pairs. RWCC will introduce some tools the coaches can use during their coaching sessions and explain more about what they will be doing as a coach in school.
Each trainee coach will need a coachee chosen from their school. The coachee will ideally be someone who works in a different role to the trainee coach, and even better doesn’t work closely with them in their day to day work. This will help the trainee coach as it will make it harder for them to mentor!
Goal Setting Meeting (via teams in Jan/Feb)
RWCC will lead an intake meeting with the coach and coachee. Working as a triad all parties will discuss the true meaning of coaching and confidentiality. This meeting will outline the working relationship going forward by exploring potential long term and short-term goals. (2-hour session)
Coach Study groups (Feb, March, May)
The Trainee Coaches will come together to review their coaching so far, with open surgery sessions providing an opportunity to share any challenges, work on solutions and celebrate successes. Coaching through change and coaching through conflict will be covered in Jan and Feb respectively. Some additional tool and tips will be shared to enable coaches to continue to develop their skills in practice. (2 ½ hour afternoon sessions)
Coach Observation & Feedback (via teams in March)
The trainee coach will carry out a coaching session in their school with their coachee whilst the RWCC coach observes. Once the coaching is completed, RWCC will give the coach feedback on their practice, with development points identified and discussed.
