Imposter Syndrome – Sophie Tyldesley
This session will look into the distressing topic that is imposter syndrome, an oftentimes debilitating conviction for sufferers that makes them believe they are in some way not good enough or deserving of their role, achievements or positive experiences/situation in life. It is frequently characterised by thoughts or beliefs along the lines of “Nobody else knows it but I am failing in my work” and “I’ve just been lucky – I haven’t earned this job”. Those who experience imposter syndrome are not necessarily in any way bad in their work or role – they can often be very successful and highly achieving, but are just unable to internalise their accomplishments or the belief that they are actually doing well. This can result in equating their successes to the work of others or to being flukes. On the flip side, some researchers have compared imposter syndrome to perfectionism and chastising self-beliefs that nothing one achieves is as good as it should be. The syndrome is something that affects most people to one degree or another over the course of their career, often in one of these ways.
