About this event

COB OVEN PROJECT @ MAY PROJECT GARDENS - REGISTER TO JOIN US!

We have started to build an outdoor oven called 'cob oven' at our hub!
It's a traditional, wood-fired, clay pizza oven.

🍕We are aiming to feed the community and work towards making our site more functional as a business rather than seeking funding as a community interest company. It will be able to cook large, delicious pizzas, artisan bread, etc.

We have completed the first step in creating a foundation, which is important for building a stable, long-lasting structure.

Also nearly finsihed building the plinth - which is the base structure (like a treet trunk)

*** However, we've been working hard behind the scenes to prepare the site, but we've encountered some challenges, including weather issues and other problems.***

The cob oven building depends on the site being work-ready. We are also facing delays in material deliveries necessary for the final workshop and the build. Due to these reasons, we've had to reschedule the workshop to the end of May.

DO YOU WANT TO LEARN NEW SKILLS AND HELP AT THE SAME TIME? JOIN THE PROJECT:

We are looking for a team of volunteers to help assist with finishing building the plinth and making the site safe for delivering workshops in.

🔧🔨📢👷‍♂️This part of the project is in particularly in need of skilled in construction basics, masonry, garden maintenance skills for example would be a bonus! Tasks include - lifting, moving light to heavy materials and other physical labour.

Whilst doing this learn about:

  • An intro permaculture
  • Managing water flow/ flooding in a natural way
  • Tour of our other natural building on site and an explation about the process so far to build a natural oven.

If you can't make the whole day no worries - any amount of time is super helpful!

Frequently asked questions

Why are you building another cob oven?

Unfortunately, the first model didn't withstand the weather. This version is larger, more robust, and includes suitable shelter to protect it from the elements, hopefully ensuring its longevity. Join us to learn new skills and engage with a community that shares your interests.

Will there be refreshments? What utilities do you have on-site?

We have tea, cold drinks, and delicious plant-based snacks available for you. Additionally, you can make use of the fully equipped house on the site, which includes a kitchen with a cooker, bathroom, and sitting room. You can also enjoy our outdoor classroom and poly tunnel.

What about accessibility?

Improvements are needed at the council house and access points to enhance accessibility for wheelchair users and create a better garden experience. Although efforts are being made to improve safety and comfort, full accessibility is not yet achieved. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs.

What time should I arrive?

The event starts at 12 pm. Please arrive on time for a brief introductory session before the main event. Use this time to meet with others and meet the facilitator. Punctuality is important for a smooth and enjoyable time. If you can't make the whole day no worries - any amount of time is helpful.

How can I support May Project Gardens?

We are always looking for donations (plants, seeds, tools, resources, volunteering, funding/ donations etc) please contact our project coordinator to find out more - team@mayproject.org.

Is there support for volunteers?

Priority will be given to QTBIPOC and marginalised/local communities on a case-by-case basis. Addressing the lack of diversity in the environmental sector is crucial. If you have any concerns regarding travel or reasonable expenses contact us so we can find a solution that aligns: team@mayproject.org

Do I need to bring anything?

Please bring lunch to share if you are able to - but no pressure. Refreshments will be provided. *IMPORTANT* Please wear wellies/ boots - you will not be able to do this workshop in trainers/ sandals. If you have any questions, please email us at team@mayproject.org
