Event Details

Free event open to children aged 7 to 17 accompanied by a parent or carer.

Please only book one ticket for each child.

New this time - Learn or practice your soldering skills to assemble an electronic Christmas tree; then program it with a Raspberry Pi, BBC microbit or Arduino to make your own festive lights display. NB suitable for Year 5s and above. Plus regular activities Python, Scratch and Lego Mindstorm Robotics.

If in doubt which ticket type or activity to choose, email us for advice :-)

Scratch
An ideal way to get started with coding and have amazing fun building video games and animations, with all the help you need. If you have done some Scratch before, we’ve a great choice of projects to make; or develop your own game concept with the help of our wizard mentors.
Bring your own laptop if you have one, or else book a Club machine.

Python
If you already know Scratch and can type ok, now’s the time to try this powerful grown-up scripting language (and have fun too!) by creating guessing games, interactive jokes, fantasy games, noughts & crosses and lots more. Plus there's the opportunity to program the amazing BBC micro:bit using MicroPython. We recommend newcomers to coding aged over 12 go straight into Python.
Bring your own laptop if have one, or else book a Club machine. Club micro:bits provided

Lego Mindstorms NXT Robotics
Build robots and get them to interact with the real world! Use 'Scratch for NXT' (Enchanting) to program them.  Program our robots to listen, touch, move and see... then we'll use what we learn to find objects, navigate mazes, dance to music .. and more. Suitable for ninjas with previous experience of Scratch.
Session uses Club laptops and equipment.

Electronic Christmas Tree project
A fun activity for Christmas: solder up an electronic Xmas tree and then program it to make your own festive lights display. No soldering experience necessary – this kit is a great first soldering project, but you must be in Year 5 or above.

Once completed, the Christmas tree kit can be programmed using Python on the Raspberry Pi and BBC Micro:Bit or with an Arduino. You're welcome to bring your own device if you have one (plus a laptop if it’s for an Arduino or Micro:Bit) or use one of ours.

If you would like to keep your tree at the end of the session then you can do so for a donation of £2.50
Tree kit and club Raspberry Pis provided; Year 5 and above

Terms of participation:
A
parent or carer must accompany their child/children throughout the session and take responsibility for them and for their belongings while on Ham & Petersham Youth Centre premises. Organiser

CoderDojo Ham Richmond

This is the local CoderDojo for kids aged 7 to 17 in Ham, Richmond, North Kingston and surrounding areas.   We aim to run our Dojo at least monthly during term time, so join our mailing list by emailing hamrichmond.uk@coderdojo.com and follow us on Twitter @CoderDojoHam.

CoderDojo is an open source, volunteer-led global movement running free coding clubs for youngsters.  At Dojos, they learn how to  develop websites, apps, and games; or program robots and other electronic devices.  Dojos are set up and led by volunteers.  In addition to learning to code, members meet like-minded people and share their coolest projects with 'show and tell' sessions. Our aim is to make development and learning to code a fun and sociable experience. The youngsters must be accompanied throughout the session by their parent or carer.

Be cool!
