Welcome to the CODEX ROTUNDUS - historical binding - ONLINE bookbinding course! Join us on October 5, 12 and 19 (three sessions course) at 10:30 AM (Europe/London Time) for a unique experience delving into the art of historical bookbinding. Learn the techniques and secrets behind the beautiful bindings of the past from the comfort of your own home.

Unique Codex ROTUNDUS dates back to the late 15th century and well known for its beautiful illuminations. During these 3 sessions course we will learn a lot about the history of this binding and will recreate this beautiful historical binding.

Your zoom link will be sent to you directly 24 h before the workshop.
ALL THREEE SESSIONS WILL BE RECORDED so if you can't join us live you still can sign up and create it at your own convenience. RECORDINGS DON'T HAVE EXPIRY DATE and will be sent to all signed participants as well as a written handout and all diagrams etc.

You will need:

MATERIALS:

  • 2 wooden boards, 10 cm diameter
  • Paper, 30 x A4 , long grain ideally, 29.7 x 21cm
  • Thin waxed linen thread, 2meters (harbour #18), natural
  • Thin Hessian cord, 65cm, 1-1.5mm thick
  • Hessian cord, 20cm, 2mm thick
  • Thick waxed linen thread, 1.5meter, natural or colour (headbands)
  • Thin linen fabric, 3 x 10cm
  • Leather, 0.6-0.8mm thickness, 26.5 x 12.5cm and 3 strips 16 x 2cm (brown or any colour)
  • 3 metal brass fasteners
  • 3 small brass nails, 0.8cm long
  • Thick strong waxed thread, 1 meter, dark brown
  • PVA glue and brush
  • Paste (commercial or homemade - for homemade the recipe will be sent to you)

    TOOLS:
  • Cutting board
  • Craft knife
  • Bonefolder
  • Scissors
  • Pencil/pen
  • Awl
  • Needle
  • Small finishing press (optional) or clamps /wide opening bull dog clips
  • Sewing frame (optional)
  • Hand tools for tooling (optional)
  • Leather pairing knife (optional)
  • Drill with drill bit 2mm (optional)
