Coding with GameMaker (CAS CRC East Midlands)
Mon 22 February 2016, 16:30 – 18:30 GMT
Rationale/ This training sessions aims to cover:-
This twilight session is aimed at the KS3 bridge between graphical languages like Scratch and text-based languages, although it would be equally applicable at higher and lower levels.
GameMaker is a freely available commercial-grade tool, ideal for creating very polished games. It has a drag and drop interface (not too far removed from Scratch) but its true power lies in writing "proper" code. Games can even be made with a combination of the two approaches.
This session will cover:
- What can be achieved with GameMaker, and why it is so useful.
- Installation of GameMaker at home and at school.
- Getting started with GameMaker - "drag and drop".
- Writing code.
- Cross-curricular potential - making assets for games.
Belper Game Jam
Following the huge amount of interest in Video Game Design both as an extra-curricular activity and also a tool to boost engagement in coding, we are planning a Game Design Competition and day-long "Game Jam" at Belper School and Sixth Form Centre in the summer term. This would involve several teams attending and spending a day designing and building a working game, which would be scrutinised by impartial judges at the end of the day...
This would be an ideal preparatory session for the competition!
