Identifying and responding to teenagers who experience Coercive Control

Join us From Northumbria to Cornwall in this webinar as part of 16 Days Of Action to developing our awareness and toolkit to respond effectively to Teenagers experiencing Domestic Abuse

3rd DEC 10-1PM via TEAMS

The 3rd of December 2025 sits in the middle of 16 Days of Action and should have been Holly Newton’s 18th Birthday. Holly was a happy, popular, adventurous girl who loved dancing and at aged 15 had decided she was no longer happy in the 18-month relationship she had with and boyfriend and ended it. Tragically he refused to accept Holly’s decision. Today we honour Holly’s legacy her family work tirelessly to uphold.

Young people aged 16-19 are the now the most likely age group to be experiencing Domestic Abuse. Young people, just as adults need to feel safe to talk and open up, they need to feel they will be heard without judgement and not dismissed. In teen domestic abuse and especially CCB, the young person might not be able to define the experience or know that it is abuse, they may only know how they ‘feel’ – again this can be similar for adults, however there are differences and this webinar will raise awareness of those differences along with sharing some resources to support your work with young people, in particular engaging young people in safety work and recovery.

Micala, Holly’s Mum will join Barnardos today to share important lessons for us all around teenage relationship abuse; we will cover the following:

  • Holly, her family, their story
  • Definition of Coercive Control for Teenagers
  • Prevalence of Domestic Abuse in young relationships
  • Dynamics of Domestic Abuse in Teenage Relationships and the challenges
  • Tools to use with Teenagers

As this is Holly’s day on what should be her 18th birthday, Holly’s family are fundraising to install bleed kits across key locations which could save lives in the event of knife crime. If you would like to contribute please click here to visit Hollys Hope webpage.
