Description

Society and Architecture

Jon Allen

A Living Tradition of Architecture has roots in the past, and flowers with relevance in the present. It is not a rigid set of design formulae, but an approach based on understanding the relationship between all things. One strand of the Living Tradition of Architecture uses Geometry, Proportion and Number – the ‘Art of the Ever True’ – to embody and express this inter relationship and interdependence, addressing our environmental, cultural and social responsibilities.

Who is Jon Allen?

Jon Allen is an architect, geometer, teacher and writer whose work is all about building wisely. He practices architecture as part of a living tradition which joins cultural continuity with cultural responsibility, while showcasing beautiful work and craft skills. He worked closely with Keith Critchlow, a world authority on geometry, for twenty years. He lives in London, and teaches geometry workshops in the UK and US. His books Drawing Geometry and Making Geometry are published by Floris Books.

Coffee, Culture, Cake
Curated Conversations with Living Tradition Bearers

People have long gathered in coffee houses to engage in dialogue and debate. It's a practice that's vital to a dynamic, well-functioning society and one of the reasons why coffee houses were called 'penny universities' back in the 17th and 18th Century.

'Coffee, Culture, Cake' events are part of this living tradition. Hosted at Saucer & Cup, an artisan coffee house in Wimbledon Park, the curated conversations bring together a unique group of living tradition bearers - architects, storytellers, educators, philosophers, musicians - to share their perspectives and join in conversation with you, to facilitate the kind of discussion that helps society flourish.

'Coffee, Culture, Cake' subverts the conventional lecture model. Rather than 'long time for talk - little time for questions', the format of these sessions is 'a little intro, lots of time for questions, and a meaningful summing up'.

Join us at for great coffee, great cake and—with your help—great conversations.
