About this event

Travel & Outdoor • Hiking

Start point: Tourist information point and P.O. Market Cross, Ambleside

Length: 12.4km (7.7 miles) with 506m (1660ft) of ascent

Time: 5.5 hours (approx.)

Walk grade: 5 (see grade description below)

This walk starts in Ambleside and visits Rydal Cave, then goes across the open fell of Loughrigg before descending to Grasmere (Lake). On a clear day there are wonderful views to Windermere and Helm Crag. We will stop for a break near White Moss Common before crossing to the other side of the valley and returning along the Coffin Route. Here we’ll follow an ancient route and see the homes of some of the Lake District’s famous poets as well as the historic Rydal Hall.

We will be walking on paths uphill and across rough open fell and along tracks with uneven ground. The route includes kissing gates and some steps over walls.

Grade 5 walks are our most challenging full day walks which involve going onto the fell summits. These walks require a good level of fitness and full walking kit appropriate for the weather conditions. Some people may find walking poles useful. You may encounter sustained climbs up some steeper sections. The surfaces can be rough and uneven, with rocky or muddy sections, irregular steps, stiles or narrow gates and gaps.

Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.

Your confirmation email will include full details - please read it carefully.
