Event description

Description

Meet at West Dean Centre, Bream- plenty of free parking available- at 2pm.

Walk past the Hard Up Tree through former encroachments into open fields with fine views across the valley of the river Lyd to the Yorkley area. We continue past the site of the Stoney Stile into the private woodland of Devil’s Chapel where iron ore was mined from Roman Times. After traversing some meadows we pass a long-forgotten monument and continue to St James church.

Walk through the original Bream village past a seventeenth century farmhouse and Bream’s first proper school on to Bream’s Meand. We continue through Noxon Park where more iron ore was mined and follow its route along a dramroad built by David Mushet to the entrance to Oakwood Mill Deep Level iron mine.

Walk from Oakwood Mill past the remains of Bromley Furnace and Flourmill Colliery, to Navvy’s Arch. A pleasant uphill woodland walk of returns us to the Hard Up Tree.

Expect to encounter stiles & mud

Approximately 5.2 miles.
