Description

Join us on Explore Your Archive 2017 #lovearchives day to celebrate the magnificent Collingwood Archive. Judith Dray, our Assistant Archivist, will deliver a captivating lecture and lead you on a journey to discover some of its treasures, before Louise Jensen introduces the achievements of an exciting participatory arts project inspired by the archive.

Who were the Collingwoods?

The Collingwoods were a world-famous family of remarkable artists, archaeologists, philosophers, and writers from the Lake District, including some remarkable (yet often forgotten) women artists. W. G. Collingwood was John Ruskin’s secretary and biographer and a friend of Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons and suspected double agent. Many members of the family appear as inspirations behind characters in Ransome’s fiction.

The archive comprises a treasure trove of distinctive materials that have largely been inaccessible to public interaction … until now. Thousands of letters and correspondence dating from the 18th century (including letters from E. M. Forster and Beatrix Potter, and many from John Ruskin and Arthur Ransome), intimate diaries, sketches, personal recipe books, photographs, story books and outstanding landscapes. (See https://scolarcardiff.wordpress.com/2017/07/12/collingwoodintroduction for more information on the family and their archive.)

Participatory arts project: Collingwood Children

The evening will also showcase the creative culmination of a series of participatory art workshops for Grangetown residents recovering from mental health issues. Workshop facilitator Louise Jensen will introduce the audience to this innovative outreach project and talk us through an exhibition of the original artwork created by workshop participants - all inspired by the Collingwood children and this magnificent archive.

This event is generously supported by Welsh Government and Archives Wales.

Collingwood: Dathlu archif wych

Ymunwch a ni ar gyfer diwrnod Pori Drwy’ch Archif 2017 – #lovearchive er mwyn dathlu archif wych Collingwood. Bydd Judith Dray, ein Archifydd Cynorthwyol, yn cyflwyno araith afaelgar ac yn eich tywys ar daith i ddarganfod rhai o'i thrysorau, cyn bod cyflwyniad gan Louise Jensen am gyflawniadau prosiect celf cyfranogol, a ysbrydolwyd gan yr archif.

Pwy oedd y Collingwoods?

Roedd y Collingwoods yn deulu byd enwog o artistiaid, archeolegwyr, athronwyr, ac awduron rhyfeddol o Ardal y Llynnoedd, gan gynnwys rhai artistiaid rhyfeddol sy'n ferched rhyfeddol ond eto, yr anghofir amdanynt y fynych. W. G. Collingwood oedd ysgrifennydd a chofiannydd John Ruskin, a ffrind Arthur Ransome, awdur Swallows and Amazons a rhywun yr amheuir ei fod yn asiant dwbl. Ymddangosir bod llawer o aelodau'r teulu wedi ysbrydoli’r cymeriadau yn ffuglen Ransome.
Mae'r archif yn cynnwys trysorfa o ddeunyddiau unigryw y bu, i raddau helaeth, yn anhygyrch at ddibenion rhyngweithio cyhoeddus... tan nawr. Miloedd o llythyrau a gohebiaeth sy'n dyddio o'r 18fed ganrif (gan gynnwys llythyrau oddi wrth E. M. Forster a Beatrix Potter, a llawer gan John Ruskin ac Arthur Ransome), â chynnwys personol iawn, brasluniau, llyfrau ryseitiau personol, ffotograffau, llyfrau stori a thirluniau rhagorol. (Gweler https://scolarcardiff.wordpress.com/2017/07/12/collingwoodintroduction i gael rhagor o wybodaeth am y teulu a’u harchif.)

Prosiect celf cyfranogol: Plant Collingwood

Bydd y noson hefyd yn arddangos ffrwyth creadigol cyfres o weithdai celf cyfranogol ar gyfer trigolion Grangetown sy'n gwella o broblemau iechyd meddwl. Bydd hwylusydd y gweithdy, Louise Jensen, yn cyflwyno’r gynulleidfa i'r prosiect allgymorth arloesol hwn ac yn ein tywys drwy arddangosfa o’r gwaith celf gwreiddiol a grëwyd gan gyfranogwyr y gweithdai - ysbrydolwyd pob un ohonynt gan blant Collingwood a’r archif wych hon.

Cefnogir y digwyddiad hwn drwy garedigrwydd Llywodraeth Cymru ac Archifau Cymru.
