This 5-week course introduces you to the fundamentals of working with colour and offers a hands-on approach to building colour confidence. Through a series of playful exercises using both still-life and life-model setups, you’ll learn to mix harmonious palettes, explore expressive colour contrasts, and apply colour with intention. Working across painting, collage, and print techniques, we’ll explore warm/cool dynamics, complementary and analogous schemes, and how to create depth using greys and neutrals. Colour will be explored as both form and feeling—considering how it shapes composition, mood, and gesture.

Aims:

• Develop a personal understanding of colour through guided mixing and palette-building

• Learn to mix colour palettes with confidence

• Gain confidence using colour expressively in drawing, painting, and printmaking

• Learn from historical and contemporary artists who use colour inventively

• Explore colour in relation to both the figure and still life

• Use a range of media—including collage, oil paint, acrylic, and relief printing—to test and refine your palette choices.
