Event description

Description

We're collaborating with local designer Lucila Kenny to bring you a Learning Lab on natural dyeing as part of our current COLOUR theme at Fashion for Good.

The use of plants for dyes is well-known. By drying, grinding, soaking and heating, plants are transmuted into pigments that will then be used to enrich people's lives through the decoration of fibers, leather, fabrics, crafts, hair and even their bodies. But plants also possess a variety of curative properties. In a way, the colors obtained from the processing of these raw materials retain those healing attributes, moving from the material and chromatic dimension through a gateway that lead us to rediscover a forgotten traditional knowledge.

During this workshop Lucila will share her knowledge through hands on work-stations with demo's on the process of: colour extraction, types of fibres, how to prepare the material for dyeing, dye-baths with examples, results, possibilities and more. Please note you will not be dyeing items yourself in this session as this process takes hours so won't fit within the timeslot!

Who this session is for: Anyone who likes to experiment with textiles, beginning natural dyers, gardeners interested in new uses for traditional plants, or those interested to know more about the dyeing process within fashion.

What you will get out of the session: Deep understanding of the present situation of natural dyeing for textiles, with Lucila sharing her seven years of experience to inspire you on your own natural dyeing journey.
