6-Week Course: An Exploration of Colour Inspired by the Work of Josef Albers

6 weeks / Every Friday / Starts 5th Sept - ends 10th Oct / 10am-12pm / Newhaven / Marine Workshops / All welcome / sliding scale - pay what you can afford (use green bottle guide on photos) - free - £120

This 6-week creative journey draws inspiration from the pioneering colour studies of Josef Albers, guiding participants through a hands-on exploration of how we perceive, combine, and respond to colour.

Through a series of engaging activities, we will investigate how colours interact, shift and transform depending on their context. Just as Albers encouraged, we will move beyond theory into direct experience, training the eye and mind to notice subtle variations, illusions and harmonies that often go unseen.

What to Expect

Over the course of six weeks, you will:

  • Discover the relativity of colour — how perception changes with surrounding hues.
  • Experiment with colour interactions using collage
  • Explore optical illusions and the emotional resonance of colour
  • Create personal colour studies inspired by Albers’ Interaction of Color exercises.
  • Collaborate in group exercises to compare and refine perception.

Who Is It For?

This course welcomes artists, designers and anyone curious about the power of colour whether you are a complete beginner or a professional creative looking to refresh your eye.

Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Have a richer, more nuanced awareness of how colour behaves.
  • Be equipped with practical exercises to enhance colour choice in creative work.
  • Gain a personal portfolio of colour studies and notes for ongoing exploration.

Join us and learn to see colour in a way thay can transform the way you view art, design and the world around you.
